Saint Peter Cathedral

A church already existed in 1028 but was destroyed by the devastating fire of 1141. It was later rebuilt and consecrated by Pope Lucius III in 1184.

After numerous renovations, the interior today is distinctly Baroque, conveying an impression of majestic grandeur.

Among the artworks, visitors can admire The Annunciation by Ludovico Carracci, frescoed in the central lunette of the presbytery, a Romanesque Crucifixion carved in cedarwood, and a terracotta sculptural group known as The Dead Christ with the Weeping Marys.
